The circle of lichen

So, I got out ahead of the weather to snap a better picture of my fancy blue lichen. I have examined it thoroughly and am more confident then ever that it is lichen. However, if anybody has the website where I can submit my picture to the lichen-heads I would appreciate it, I neglected to take it down. Anyhoo here are the pictures, tell me your thoughts.

  1. I definitely see where the confusion comes from as far as this stuff looking like blue paint. That would have been my initial reaction if I came across this stuff, especially near a YMCA. (I was a 5 year Y camp counselor and when the kids got antsy we just said here's some paint, go paint a rock.) It does have a very vivid color does seem a little exotic for this area. However, the patterns down the side of the rock do sort of look like lichen patches rather than paint splatters. Also, in the bottom of the top picture, the way it peels away from the rock is very lichen-like. Overall, the texture seems very flat and paint-like, but side by side like that with the typical run-of-the-mill green stuff, I guess it looks just like lichen. Very interesting find!

  2. Submit it to www.inaturalist.org. You just need to set up a username and password, and then you can post pics to your heart's content. I agree, this is definitely a lichen and not just paint. A very vibrant blue! the other thing to consider is that the fungal portion of lichens will put up "fruiting bodies" that can look very different from the rest of the lichen. That's not really what seems to be happening here, but check and see what the pros say on inat.
